Data You Give Us Directly
Search Queries
A query typed into a search box is sent to the outside company that operates that tool. The provider processes the terms and supplies its results. Sussex County Criminal History does not keep or log those query terms on its own systems.
Messages and Contact Submissions
When a visitor sends an email or other direct message, the message may be retained long enough to address it and maintain an ordinary business record. It is not disclosed outside the organization unless consent or a legal duty permits or requires disclosure.
Data We Gather Automatically
Routine server and analytics records can capture technical facts when a page loads, including:
- The device's Internet Protocol address
- Browser name, version, and operating system
- Device category
- Pages viewed and time spent on them
- A referring website, when supplied
- The date and time of each request
Cookies and Analytics
Cookies are small files that can help measure traffic, recognize session activity, and show how visitors move through the website. Analytics providers may combine visits into broad performance reports. Most browsers allow cookies to be limited or blocked, although disabling them can change how some features operate.
What We Do With This Data
- Operate, secure, and improve website performance
- Pass a submitted query to the selected outside search service
- Understand which Sussex County reference pages are used most
- Detect errors, abuse, and technical failures
- Deliver advertising that may reflect visitor interests
No Criminal-Record Data on File
Sussex County Criminal History does not operate, compile, or sell a database of individual criminal records. It publishes general directions to the Sussex County Sheriff, court clerks, VSP Central Criminal Records Exchange and Civil & Applicant Records Exchange, Virginia Department of Corrections, and Virginia Sex Offender and Crimes Against Minors Registry. Visitor information is not assembled into a consumer report, and this website is not a consumer reporting agency under the Fair Credit Reporting Act.
Third-Party Search Partners
Independent companies power the search boxes that appear on some pages. Data entered there is governed by the selected provider's privacy terms, retention rules, and sharing practices. Those policies are outside this website's control and should be reviewed before a query is submitted.
Links to Other Websites
Links may lead to Sussex County departments, Virginia courts, state agencies, legal resources, or outside search services. Once a visitor follows an external link, the destination's privacy policy applies. Personal information should be provided only after reviewing that destination's terms.
Advertising companies may use their own technology to measure visits across websites and select ads. Any such tracking takes place through the advertising provider's systems.
Who Might See Your Data
Personal data is not sold. Limited information can be disclosed to:
- Search providers that process a query chosen by the visitor
- Analytics vendors that measure use and performance
- Advertising networks that place or measure ads
- Government or law-enforcement authorities acting under valid legal process
How We Protect Your Data
Reasonable administrative and technical safeguards are used for information under this site's control. No Internet transmission, storage service, or security method is guaranteed to prevent every unauthorized event. Protection efforts therefore reduce risk but cannot promise absolute security.
Users Under 18
The website is intended for adults and does not knowingly collect personal information from a person under 18. If information is found to have been submitted by a minor, it will be removed when the situation is verified.
Your Data Rights
When it applies to a particular person, organization, and processing activity, the Virginia Consumer Data Protection Act, Va. Code § 59.1-575 et seq., can provide rights involving personal data. Statutory exceptions, verification steps, and scope limits remain controlling. Depending on applicable law, a person may be able to:
- Confirm whether personal data is processed and obtain access to it
- Seek correction of inaccurate personal data
- Request deletion of qualifying personal data
- Opt out of covered targeted advertising, sale, or certain profiling
Updates to This Policy
This privacy policy may be revised as services, legal duties, or data practices change. A revised version becomes available on this page and carries a new effective date so visitors can identify the current terms.
Effective date: August 10, 2026
