This Is Not a Government Office. Sussex County Criminal History is privately operated. It cannot retrieve records, conduct an official background check, change an agency file, or receive a court filing.
Need an Official Record?
Choose the custodian by record type. Calling before a visit is prudent because official pages publish two working numbers for the Circuit clerk.
- Arrest, booking, and incident records: Sussex County Sheriff's Office Records, 20212 Thornton Square, Sussex, VA 23884; (434) 246-5000, option 2; weekdays 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The FOIA fax is (434) 246-5014.
- Adult misdemeanors and felony preliminary matters: Sussex General District Court, 15098 Courthouse Road, Sussex, VA 23884; (434) 246-1096; weekdays 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
- Felonies and misdemeanor appeals: Sussex Circuit Court Clerk, 15088 Courthouse Road, Sussex, VA 23884; (434) 246-1012 or (434) 246-1017; weekdays 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
- Official Virginia criminal histories: use the Virginia Department of State Police CCRE/CARE Criminal Record Check selector and current SP-167 instructions.
- Police or crash reports: request the report from the issuing agency; Sussex Sheriff lists incident and crash copies at $5.
- Expungement or sealing filings: obtain the exact disposition, then confirm current forms and filing requirements with the Sussex Circuit Court clerk.
The Sheriff's records route accepts requests by mail, telephone, email, fax, or in person. A precise request should identify the record type, incident or case number when known, person, date range, location, and desired format. Court records must be requested from the clerk that holds the case rather than from the Sheriff's Office.
